"This song takes me straight back to being sixteen. I remember hearing that riff on the radio for the first time and just thinking, yeah, this is a good one. It's stuck with me ever since.

It was the third single off their self-titled debut, out in the summer of 1991, and ended up being the song that defined them. What I didn't know until much later is that it almost never made the album at all. CJ Snare didn't want to bring it to the rest of the band, and Jon Bon Jovi apparently warned him it would ruin his career if he put it out.

Good job he didn't listen. It went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the States, but barely made a dent over here in any meaningful way.

One thing I only learned recently: guitarist Bill Leverty is credited as co-writer even though he had nothing to do with actually writing it. Snare said they just split credits evenly, the same arrangement Lennon and McCartney used. It's amazing what you learn doing this!

Still going today, over thirty years after this one made their name. I still love that riff!"
