THE REVIEW
Airbourne’s self-titled sixth album finds the Australian hard rockers doing what they do best: delivering loud, direct and unapologetically old-school rock ’n’ roll. After almost seven years away, the band return with twelve tracks built around huge riffs, pounding drums, gritty vocals and an abundance of attitude. Joel O’Keeffe remains the unmistakable focal point, while the twin-guitar attack gives the record its familiar muscle. Produced and mixed with a deliberately powerful, live-feeling sound, the album rarely strays from Airbourne’s established formula, but there is enough variation in the songwriting to keep things moving.
THE SONGS
“GUTSY” gets proceedings moving at full throttle, immediately establishing the album’s no-nonsense approach. “Alive After Death (Last Plane Out)” follows with another powerful rocker, combining driving guitars with a more reflective theme celebrating rock legends whose music lives on. “Here She Comes” opens the record into bigger territory, pairing Airbourne’s rawness with a huge, melodic chorus shaped by Bryan Adams and Mutt Lange. “Kid In A Candy Store” and “Sky High” return to the band’s cheekier side, while “Who Put The Rhythm In You?” adds plenty of groove and swagger. “Christmas Bonus” keeps the humour flowing before “Last Man Standing” delivers another defiant anthem. “Rock ’N’ Roll Ya” and “Bogotá” maintain the momentum, with “Hells Got No Vacancy” bringing another dose of hard-driving riff power. Closing track “Send Me To Rock ’N’ Roll Heaven” provides the album’s most heartfelt moment, paying tribute to the musicians and influences who helped shape Airbourne’s world.
THE VERDICT
Airbourne sees the band doubling down on their trademark hard rock formula while adding enough melody, humour and heart to keep their sixth album thoroughly engaging.
