Mitch Malloy is a North Dakota native with a big, radio-ready voice and one of rock's most remarkable back stories. His debut single Anything At All was a Top 20 rock charting hit, and by the mid-nineties his voice had caught the ear of the most famous band in the world — Van Halen asked him to be their frontman in the wake of Sammy Hagar's departure, before Gary Cherone ultimately took the role.
Eddie Van Halen maintained a close friendship with Malloy and bankrolled his 2000 album Shine, with Malloy later recalling: "Ed was like my big brother back then and he really loved those songs." Shine On, released in 2012, is Malloy's own self-produced re-recording of that album — ten tracks of hook-laden AOR and melodic hard rock, recorded, engineered, mixed, and mastered entirely by Malloy himself at his own studio. Eight of the ten tracks are revisited from the original Shine, with Malloy bringing a fresh perspective to songs with a remarkable pedigree.
