Star Circus’s sophomore album, ‘From The Wreckage’, cements the UK hard rockers’ reputation as one of the most inventive and emotionally resonant acts on the current scene. Led by Dave Winkler, the band delivers a collection that’s both a love letter to classic Hard Rock and a bold step into new musical territory, blending AOR sheen and nineties American Power Pop influences reminiscent of San Francisco’s cult heroes Jellyfish.
From the opening track, Star Circus makes it clear they’re not content to be pigeonholed. The album’s singles – ‘One Hit Wonder’, ‘Turn The Tide’ and ‘Chained To You’ – serve as a microcosm of the band’s versatility. The first (and latest single to be released) bursts with infectious hooks and clever lyricism, channelling the melodic sensibility of Cheap Trick and the layered harmonies Jellyfish fans will instantly recognise. ‘Turn The Tide’ showcases the group’s AOR chops, with soaring choruses and polished guitar work, while ‘Chained To You’ leans into a darker, moodier groove, revealing the band’s depth and willingness to experiment.
What truly sets ‘From The Wreckage’ apart is its thoughtful, mature songwriting. Winkler’s lyrics are intelligent and provocative, tackling themes of resilience, self-discovery, and the complexities of modern life. These aren’t just songs designed to get fists in the air – they’re designed to stick with you long after the last note fades. The band’s knack for marrying introspective storytelling with anthemic arrangements recalls the best of Classic and Modern Hard Rock, offering listeners both immediate gratification and plenty to unpack on repeat listens.
Star Circus’s live line-up (with all but Periotti, plus guests, performing on the album) comprises – Winkler (vocals/guitar), Sophie Aurélia Young (bass), Santiago Periotti (guitar), and Reuben O’Donoghue (drums) – function as a tight, cohesive unit. The interplay between the guitars is particularly striking, weaving harmonies and textures that elevate each song. The production is crisp and dynamic, allowing the band’s eclectic influences to shine without ever feeling cluttered or derivative.
Along with Jellyfish, Star Circus carries the proverbial torch with their ability to fuse Beatles-esque melodies, Glam swagger, and Power Pop sensibilities into something fresh, vital and something wholly welcome. ‘From The Wreckage’ is a nothing short of a triumph that balances nostalgia with innovation, hooks with heart and is executed with intelligence and accessibility. For fans of Hard Rock, AOR and Power Pop (especially those who appreciate provocative, artful songwriting), this album is essential listening. Star Circus have not only avoided the sophomore slump; they’ve raised the bar for themselves and their peers.
