Powerhill - 'Generation X'

‘Generation X’ is a solid album which I can easily recommend and give two big thumbs up to.

Powerhill hail from Switzerland and create self- proclaimed Farm Metal! These Hard Rockers don’t take themselves too seriously and are proud flag waving Gen X’ers who are lovers of the eighties Rock scene – which is abundantly clear in their music. Before you ask what is “Farm Metal”, it is more of a term coined by the band for their tongue-in-cheek approach to their music rather than a definable sound. These guys have a prominent cow mascot called Clotilde who is presented as a member of the band - that should only emphasise the band’s humour and musical approach.

Powerhill are eighties flavoured-to-the-max Hard Rock, filled with thunderous

energy and in-your-face blunt chugging guitar riffs and fist-pumping choruses. Their sound is very European and while fellow countrymen Gotthard would be a quick comparison, I think Krokus would be a more accurate one. I would say they have more in common with Krokus and their Metal leanings than the bluesy Classic Rock of Gotthard.

They aren’t reinventing the wheel; they are just good time old fashioned Rock ‘n’

Roll who don’t take themselves too seriously, and have a fun-filled approach to their song writing and lyrics which is extremely easy to listen to and enjoy effortlessly. They are far from perfect but they’re a change from other similar acts who take their music more seriously, and this helps them give a stronger impression on me as a listener, I feel.

They may not take themselves too seriously and lean heavily into their “Farm

Metal” persona, but the quality of their musicianship instantly dismisses any notion of them being a joke act. Strong vocals from frontwoman Veronica Torre, who could have easily strode onto a stage back in the day and blown anyone away, and potent guitar riffs from Alberto Ceppi power the band’s sound. This is enhanced by keyboards and intricate guitar work which boosts many songs from rough and ready rockers to indelible tunes you’ll get stuck in your head!

thumbs up to. Powerhill are revelling in the sounds of the eighties without sounding too retro and they deliver an upbeat album which is undeniably smile inducing. They should appeal to fans of the Metallic Hard Rock acts of the late eighties like Kix, Tesla, Keel, Ratt and of course Krokus!
