Pete Wylie, the acclaimed songwriter and Liverpudlian legend, has been making music under his own name and the many WAH! monikers since 1979. ‘Teach Yself Wah! – A Best Of’ brings together the best of these recordings and two unreleased versions for the first time in over two decades in a sleeve featuring a portrait painted by Pete Townshend.
Says Wylie, ‘I’ve wanted to do this for years. welcome to Wylieworld! This is Teach Yself Wah! Alan Moore asked: Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow? We intend to reveal the answer, the story of the songs, and WAH!TV at www.petewylie.com’
Pete began his career in the late 1970s in Liverpool, forming bands with Julian Cope, Ian MacCulloch, Pete Burns, Ian Broudie, future Frankie Goes To Hollywood member Paul Rutherford and soon-to-be Siouxsie And The Banshees drummer Budgie. In 1979, Wylie adopted the WAH! name going through many incarnations including Wah!, The Mighty Wah!, Wah! Heat and Shambeko! Say Wah. Support from John Peel helped Pete/Wah! to gain nationwide attention. Over the years he has had a string of classic singles, including ‘The Story Of The Blues’, ‘Come Back’, ‘Sinful, ‘Seven Minutes to Midnight’ and later, the LFC anthem ‘Heart As Big As Liverpool’. He’s also performed with The Farm, Apollo 440, appeared with The KLF on their notorious first incarnation of ‘It’s Grim Up North’ and toured with the band Dead Men Walking featuring Glen Matlock of The Sex Pistols.
A proud Liverpudlian, Wylie’s defining song ‘Heart As Big As Liverpool’ is especially popular on Merseyside and with Liverpool Football Club supporters and is used in the official Hillsborough tribute video. In 2008, Pete performed at the opening ceremony of Liverpool’s European City of Culture tenure.
‘Teach Yself WAH! – A Best Of’ brings together tracks from across his numerous musical highways and byways. Wylie hand-picked the 20 songs to specifically highlight key points from each period in his life. As well as including his early singles and the songs which brought him chart success, he has also chosen deep cuts, including the original version of his collaboration with Big Hard Excellent Fish, available here for the first time since its initial 12” only release. Pete has also recreated two early tracks, especially for this album, which hear Pete sounding as vital as ever.
Pete will embark on a UK tour from February to April 2024, with festival appearances and additional dates throughout the year in support of ‘Teach Yself WAH! – A Best Of.’
Available on Digipack CD and 2-LP housed in a gatefold sleeve with cover art featuring a hand-painted portrait of Pete by Pete Townshend, with liner notes from Pete Wylie.
