THE REVIEW
Words Of Wisdom!
This album is absolute dynamite! If you thought that Billy Morrison had reached his zenith with ‘The Morrison Project’, think again; because he’s raised the bar again, and the genres he graces never sounded so good!
Starting with the title track, he sings about his time as a homeless addict. Listen to the lyrics; raw, emotional, honest and genuine, which is pure Morrison. There are no airs and graces; what you get is what you see, and it’s absolutely refreshing, plus the riffs are fantastic. Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme) and Sully Erna (Godsmack) guest on ‘Becoming’, and it excels with their mastery. There is a lovely hint of Ozzy Osbourne/Alice Cooper on the third track ‘Forgive Me’, and it’s one to have on repeat; the guitar is amazing, let it flow over you and enjoy.
"Listen to the lyrics; raw, emotional, honest and genuine, which is pure Morrison."
One wonderful thing about this album is that it never settles into a pattern; every song brings new delights, and the addition of Marilyn Manson to ‘The Tailor’, to add real menace to the vocals, is a masterstroke! It will become a favourite of many who listen to it. Back firmly into Hard Rock territory, ‘Take Me As I Am’ is a pure Billy banger! The riffs are catchy, the lyrics meaningful, and the whole song just sounds damn cool.
There is a great Hip-Hop/Rock mash-up when B‑Real (Cypress Hill), Chuck D (Public Enemy) and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels (Run-DMC) join Morrison centre stage on ‘No Suspects’. ‘Another Day’ is a pure Hard Rock headbanger with killer guitar throughout. The pace slows slightly with ‘Leave No Trace’, which features Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses) on lead vocals, and brings an early Rolling Stones vibe to proceedings.
Pulsing synthesisers kick the doors open for ‘Devil In Your Eyes’, but then it’s pure Morrison and Hard Rock all the way, which crosses over to ‘Tearing Down The Wall’. Dexter Holland (The Offspring) guests on ‘Never Gonna Change’, and it’s a rebellious Punk Rock anthem from start to finish; will it get your toes tapping – you better believe it! We finish with a smooth piano-led ballad that shows Morrison is equally comfortable with this style. Just like the opening song, it’s an autobiographical piece delivered with unpretentious sentiment.
"One wonderful thing about this album is that it never settles into a pattern"
The album may be called ‘Hollow’; it’s anything but! Each song is a gem that deserves your attention! Billy Morrison, the master!
