THE REVIEW
Words Of Wisdom!
For those of you that were around just as the New Wave Of Heavy Metal was arising, it was a time filled with excitement and a sense of community that few had experienced before. The arrival of the latest weekly edition of music paper Sounds and getting a tape ready to record ‘The Friday Rock Show’ at ten o’clock became a vital ritual, and back then local Odeon’s and Gaumont’s were regularly graced with national tours by bands like Saxon, UFO and Whitesnake in the days when a UK jaunt wasn’t just three or four dates. Halcyon days indeed, but arguably things are much more fervent now than they ever have been. Social media and technology have truly opened a world of staggering possibilities, bands from all over the globe being seen easily outside the pages of select magazines and large-scale shows. Fortunately, Norwegian outfit Lily Löwe are therefore going to get more of the exposure they deserve and this, their sophomore album, demands attention.
"Lily Löwe are therefore going to get more of the exposure they deserve"
It may have been four years since their self-titled debut, but the outfit have been busy since, their ‘Glitter And Gore’ EP of last year a tantalising glimpse of what was to come, and as impressive as what came before was, this is a big step up for them. The Löwe displayed here is a leaner, meaner and more focussed combo, the intervening years and time on the road tightening the band and helping them develop their direction. Not only this, but the release’s nine tracks add up to a taut (around) thirty minutes long, all the fat trimmed and the focus on killer hooks and irresistible melodies, but never to the expense of the writing.
"The Löwe displayed here is a leaner, meaner and more focussed combo"
Vocalist Lill Sofie Wilsberg (a.k.a Lily Löwe), guitarists Adrian Sunde Bjerketved and Stian Hansen, along with rhythm section Eiliv Sagrusten on drums and bass player Patrik Svendsen, show what they’re made of with the opening rush of ‘Demons’, its ballsy heft and big chorus instantly addictive. With numbers like the raging ‘Puppet Master’, a crushing ‘Beg For Your Life’ and the big and wonderful titular ballad ‘Beautiful Disaster’, they show it’s possible to go both ends of the Hard Rock spectrum and not get lost in the middle or drop in quality. The album closes with another soulful slow number in ‘Love Like This’, showing the confidence to end on a whisper rather than a scream. Their star continues to rise.
