Grand’s third album is a confident slice of melodic rock that understands exactly what makes AOR so enjoyable. Guilty Pleasure is packed with strong guitar work, prominent keyboards and melodies that are built to stick. The expanded five-piece line-up gives the band more room to develop their sound, with Mattias Olofsson’s vocals sitting comfortably over Jakob Svensson’s guitars and Maja Thorén’s keyboards. The production is clean without sanding away the rock edge, and there is enough movement between the songs to keep the album from becoming predictable. Grand clearly have an affection for the classic era of AOR, but Guilty Pleasure feels like a band enjoying where they are now rather than simply looking backwards.
